Mario Rosenstock reveals “incident” with Enda Kenny on Late Lunch Live.
Comedian and impressionist Mario Rosenstock appeared on ‘Late Lunch Live’ today ahead of his nationwide tour of Gift Grub Live which begins this coming Friday night in Carlow.
Mario talked to Martin King and Lucy Kennedy about an “incident” he almost had with Taoiseach Enda Kenny in a Killarney hotel lobby and about how his impressions go down at home.
‘Late Lunch Live’ airs weekdays from 3.30pm – 4.30pm, on TV3.
Comedian and impressionist Mario Rosenstock joined Late Lunch Live presenters Lucy Kennedy and Martin King ahead of his nationwide tour of Gift Grub Live which begins this coming Friday night in Carlow
The comedian discussed the characters in his new show which incorporates U2’s Bono and The Edge along with all the familiar sketches including Roy Keane and TV3’s Vincent Browne. Mario also spoke about meeting various people he impersonates who usually enjoy his comedy and imitations, however he did have an “incident” in which he almost met Taoiseach Enda Kenny when checking into a hotel in Killarney. He explained that when he entered the hotel, the Taoiseach was in the lounge.
“I looked to my right and the Taoiseach was coming through the front door, but the guy from my right ran from the desk, jumped on the Taoiseach and pulled him into the kitchen or the laundry room or something! Another guy grabbed me and said 'you need to have a sandwich' and I replied 'I don't want a sandwich' and then I was brought into a library and given a plateful of sandwiches, I was then brought out and I asked 'what the hell was that all about?' They said 'oh there was a bit of an incident there or there could have been'!
"So maybe the man taking care of Enda Kenny thought there could have been an international diplomatic incident had the Taoiseach met an impressionist.
“The Taoiseach's handlers are obviously afraid that he'll get into some sort of an embarrassing encounter and it'll end up in the front page of some newspaper, and in fairness if that had been Bertie in the past, he would have stormed through the door and there wouldn't have been a problem but I think with this Taoiseach, there is a problem with him being exposed in public and that's why they keep him away from Vincent [Browne].”
Although Mario’s impressions are a hit with audiences, he explained to Lucy and Martin that they do not always go down so well at home and they have now been banned from the house.
“It probably came to a hiatus one time when I started thinking 'can I use these characters from my benefit in some way?' So one day anyway we had a ferocious row, I went out, I came back and she asked 'well, have you got anything to say for yourself? And I said in my Jose impersonation 'would it help if I said it as José Mourinho? Maybe we can make up? Maybe I can bring you out for a little lunch, maybe I can score again!' So I tried to re-score my wife as José Mourinho and it didn't work! But it does score with a big audience!”
