Interviews with home cooks and non-cooks available on request.
‘Angeline’s Home Cooks’ Episode 3 airs Thursday 18th September at 8.30pm on TV3.
Angeline’s Home Cooks returns this week with the third episode, bringing cooking back to basics. Presented by Angeline Ball, this innovative TV3 series will bring all the lost techniques and skills to homely dishes back in vogue.
In each episode, there will be two home cooks who share their recipes with two non-cooks, people who have never learnt the basics, who have confessed to burning down kitchens and poisoning family members!
Episode three will see non-cooks Ruth Leonard and Aine Genockey take on a crab cakes and pork cassoulet.
.
Mother of two, Ruth, a marketing manager for Erdinger Lager blames her commute and lack of kitchen confidence for her weak track record in the kitchen. She gets a 7:40am train every morning from Drogheda to Shelbourne Road and works in Ballsbridge. Her husband drives the family car to his office, which is in Temple Bar. Both are on the road from very early. Ruth’s mother, who is an amazing cook, feeds her children as she minds them and sends them home with her and Andrew’s evening meals on plates covered in tin foil!
Our second non-cook Aine, lives with her partner, Triona, who is a great cook. Aine says a healthy level of competition is important for a successful relationship and that’s why she wants to up her game in the kitchen! Aine confesses to being very competitive and has played football for the Irish Women’s Football team, travelling all over Europe with them. Aine’s teammate, Seana, told us that Aine used to survive on rice krispie squares when the team was on the road. Aine once cooked fajitas for Triona but accidentally put chillies in instead of peppers and nearly blew her head off! Needless to say it was a bit of a disaster but also very funny.
Aine was a very fussy eater growing up but believes she has become more adventurous in what she eats since then. She still has some specifics that she insists on, she will eat red peppers but not yellow ones, she will only eat onions if chopped exceptionally small and she would never eat a mushroom. She doesn’t eat fish and hates the notion of it being served with a head, eyes and a tail.
Enter the home cooks - Lynda Bateman and Mervyn Gill!
Lyndais a writer and blogger. She is originally from Pennsylvania but now lives in Greystones with her husband, John and their ten-year-old daughter, Daisy.
Lynda comes from a family of cooks. Two of her brothers are professional chefs and her parents owed a local deli at home, famous for its traditional home cooked American dishes. Lynda’s Pork, Venison, Beer & Coffee chilli was a big hit in the deli. Lynda is passionate about cooking and wanted to appear on Angeline’s Home Cooks to share her love of American cooking with our non-cooks. Her dish is crab cakes. Unlike other crab cakes, Lynda’s are not crammed full of potato but are all crab. She teams them with a gorgeous homemade tartare sauce.
Once the non-cooks have mastered the crab cakes, we turn up the heat and send them home to recreate it for their nearest and dearest.
Next they are then handed over to Sales Manager Mervyn, from Portadown, Co Armagh. Mervyn absolutely loves cooking. His father is responsible for his fantastic cooking skills. He had Mervyn and his siblings in the kitchen from a young age and they’ve all grown up with a passion for cooking. Mervyn makes a huge array of dishes. He even makes his own sausages from scratch! He also grows his own herbs and vegetables. Mervyn is making a Pork Cassoulet, which he has been cooking for over twenty years. He has tweaked it over the years and it’s a family favourite.
After Ruth and Aine leave Angeline’s Home Cooks with two recipes under their belts, we revisit them some weeks later to see if they are putting their new found kitchen skills into practice!
