TV3 GROUP RELEASE

IMMEDIATE: Friday 29th November 2013.

David Beckham hails Roy Keane in exclusive Xposé interview.

Xposé’s Glenda Gilson chats to football superstar David Beckham about the upcoming documentary ‘Class of '92’.

David said that the newly appointed assistant manager of the Republic of Ireland football team, Roy Keane, is the best captain he has ever played with.

The former England Captain also said he would love to visit Ireland again and called it a “special place” after he and Victoria tied the knot in Dublin.

Catch the full interview on Xposé tonight at 6pm.

Xposé’s Glenda Gilson met with former English footballer David Beckham to talk about the upcoming documentary Class of '92. The feature length documentary chronicles the great Manchester United generation of David Beckham, Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs, Nicky Butt and the Neville brothers, Gary and Phil as they rose to glory with the club's Champions League triumph.

Speaking about his time with Manchester United, David revealed that the newly appointed assistant manager of the Republic of Ireland football team, Roy Keane, was the best Captain he ever played with. He believes that there will never be a team like the Class of ’92 again.

“Personally I’m biased but I don’t think we’ll ever have a team like that again. I hope we do because it was so special to have lived through that. We talk about obviously the 92 team but we wouldn’t have been successful without Peter Schmeichel, Gary Pallister, Steve Bruce and Paul Ince, Mark Hughes, Eric Cantona and of course Roy [Keane]. You know I’ve never played with a player that has been so driven and talented and the will to win, you know there is no one that I’ve played with that is like Roy. He’s the best captain I’ve ever played with. The best mid-fielder I’ve ever played with.”

His love of Ireland doesn’t stop with Roy Keane. In 1999, the football superstar wed his wife and former spice girl Victoria in a lavish ceremony at Dublin’s, Luttrellstown Castle.

“I love Ireland honestly. I’m not just saying it because you’re sat here asking me but I promise you I love Ireland. It’s a special place because we got married there. Every time I visit Ireland. It’s really unbelievable. The people are so nice and I love Guinness so I can’t wait to come back.”

David explained to Glenda that getting a red card during the 1998 World Cup made him become a better player.

“There’s no pressure. For me the pressure of being a footballer doesn’t exist. You know I was doing something that I wanted to do my whole career. It was my dream to be a professional footballer. You know everything else that has come with my career, I’m very privileged to be in the position I’m in but going through 98 was an experience that of course I wish it hadn’t happened but I’ve realised why it happened now. When I look back at that time I had to go through something like that to achieve what I achieved or become that man, the player I was.”

David also spoke about playing with Eric Cantona and how it felt to win with a team he loved.

“To have actually been successful with a team that we loved and supported our whole lives, it was special.

“He [Cantona] was a hero everywhere. The fact that he was in the team at the time when we were all coming through, he was our hero. The fact that we were able to train with him day in and day out, and play with him at weekends, that for us was a dream. Eric was such an amazing character. One of the greatest footballers of all time and we got to play with him.”

Speaking about interviewing the football star, Glenda had only good things to say about David.

“Of all the press junkets and people I’ve interviewed, he was the first person to stand up and greet me. He’s a true gent and it can be nerve wrecking sitting across from people but he encouraged me in every question I asked, smiling and laughing. He’s such a kind and gorgeous person and I fell even more in love with him. I was thinking of all the grief, he and Victoria have gotten over the years and they just don’t deserve it. It was such a nice, easy interview and at the end he got up and said ‘thanks Glenda’ and gave me a kiss on the cheek. He asked about my exercise regime and said I have great arms but I told him that’s only from lifting pints of Guinness so he had a good laugh at that!”

‘Class of '92’ opens at selected Irish cinemas on Sunday 1st December.

Xposé airs weekdays at 6pm on TV3.
