Will Anna ever recover from her horrific ordeal? As she struggles to cope with the abuse she suffered at the hands of Mr Gillingham’s valet, Green, she is pushing Mr Bates away and he is adamant to get to the bottom of her heart-breaking secret.
Upstairs amid the fallout of the eventful house party, Mary faces a pressing question about her future when Mr Gillingham proposes. Could this mean Mr Gillingham and his detestable valet will be returning to Downton for good?
Meanwhile, Carson reveals surprisingly intimate details of his former life, and a trip to the bright lights of London sees Rose put the reputation of the Crawleys in jeopardy.
Speaking to Xposé’s Aisling O’Loughlin, Elizabeth McGovern, who plays Countess of Grantham Cora Crawley, talks about the clashes between the American culture and the English culture on Downton:
“I love all the clashes between the American culture and the English culture. I’m always gagging for more of that. In the Christmas episode we have my mother, Shirley MacLaine coming back with my brother so there’s the obvious knock-on effect between the Americans and the English bumping against one and other.”
Elizabeth revels that she is currently in a band and is playing the Edinburgh Fringe Festival:
“Actually it pre-dates Downton Abbey but I think sometimes when people buy a ticket based on the fact that they’re a Downton fan they’re a little shocked by what they see because it’s not really string quartet!”
“It’s been really a big passion and love of mine so it’s very, very fortunate for us that it’s starting to take off and we’re going to play the Edinburgh Fringe Festival next week, we’ve got nine dates there and so we’re all very happy about it cause it’s a bunch of musicians that have been committed to it for a really, really long time, they’ve been very loyal and it’s nice to see them getting some accolade, it makes me feel very happy.”
Elizabeth opens up about what she thinks about the character she plays in Downton Abbey:
“What’s not to like? She’s a really nice person. For me she’s kind of an old-fashioned view of feminine strength in the sense that she’s not strident. She doesn’t proselytize about issues, she doesn’t take a stand but you know that if push comes to shove she’s going to get her way. She’s strong like that.”
