Billy Ocean joined Mark Cagney and Clare McKenna on TV3’s Ireland AM this morning (Tuesday, 10th September). The Grammy Award-winning star famous for songs such as ‘When the Going Gets Tough’, and ‘Get Outta My Dreams, Get into My Car’, discussed how he loved music from an early age. Billy revealed that although he’s had worldwide success, he hasn’t progressed much from when he started playing guitar.
“A blind man taught me to play the ukulele, a blue ukulele. He taught me three chords and I’m still, you know I haven’t progressed much from there.”
The Trinidad-born singer explained that the reason he took a 15 year break from music was to be with his family.
“My kids needed me. I had already done some of the things I wanted to. I had already done, for example, breaking into American chart. I had done that a few times over. For me it just felt like I was doing the circle around and around again.”
Billy also gave some insight into his creative process and how he turns out hit songs.
“When you write a good song you know you’ve written a good song, if you’re worth your salt. You know what a good song is and you know what a mediocre song is. The important thing about writing songs is, it doesn’t matter what quality it is, you finish it.”
When Mark told the legendary soul singer that the women in TV3 were going wild for how well he looks, Billy revealed a few tricks to staying youthful.
“I exercise, I’m a vegetarian and I read my bible, I don’t know. Maybe some of the things I’m doing are good for me, I’m sure they’re not all good for me but maybe some are.”
Ireland AM airs Monday to Friday on TV3 from 7am – 10am.
