Xposé’s Aisling O’Loughlin caught up with Downton Abbey star Allan Leech on the red carpet of his new movie, ‘The Imitation Game’, at Odeon in Leicester Square London last night. The actor may play a widower in Downton Abbey, but off-screen he has a thriving love life. The star, who plays Tom Branson in TV3’s Downton Abbey, attended the event with his stunning girlfriend, the Sky Sports presenter Charlie Webster.
With a smile on his face, he introduced his girlfriend to Aisling and confided: “We met at a charity event – we love charity. We met at a CentrePoint Ambassadors event, a charity that looks after the homeless here in the UK and we met over a foosball table”.
When Charlie laughed and asked: “Guess who won?”, the Downton Abbey star answered: “No one won. Hang on! I was obviously... I wasn’t looking at the foosball table, I’ll tell you that much!”
Talking about ‘The Imitation Game’, a movie that won The People’s Choice Award for Best Film at the Toronto Film Festival in September, Allen said: “This is an important story to tell in relation to British history. Alan Turing is one of the greatest minds that Britain has ever produced and because of his sexuality, people don’t know about him. He was convicted of being gay and sentenced. And the sentence was chemical castration, which in the end drove him to the point he couldn’t use his mind the way he did and he took his life very sadly.
“So really rather than being one of the people that is celebrated as a man who actually they believe – with his work and his partners in Bletchley Park – ended the war 2 years early, saving millions of lives, he should be someone we all know by name”.
Impressed by ‘The Imitation Game’, Charlie Webster confessed that she watched the film three times. “It’s amazing for the British history. It’s incredible something I learned at school to be able to see in the film and, of course, I think Allen is amazing and the things he does – I don’t want to give it away – as a certain role, I think it’s amazing”, she said.
