TV3 GROUP RELEASE

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Tuesday 23rd September, 2014

Fifth series of Downton Abbey set to captivate audiences on TV3.

The multi award-winning drama ‘Downton Abbey’ returns to TV3 for a fifth series, promising to have viewers hooked from the very beginning.

The series will continue some of the storylines established in series four, including Mary Crawley’s relationship with Anthony Foyle and Charles Blake and Tom Branson’s flirtation with Sarah Bunting.

Oxendales, Ireland’s leading home shopping fashion brand, sponsors the brand new series of Downton Abbey on TV3.

Downton Abbey S5 Episode 1 premieres Wednesday 24th September at 9pm on TV3.

As Downton Abbey series five hits our screens, viewers can expect hopeful suitors, blackmail and even - in the nerve-wracking first episode – life-threatening danger. As wild fire engulfs the house, the lives of Downton’s residents are put at risk, before a heroic act by Thomas Barrow.

Set in 1924, the series will continue some of the storylines established in series four, including Mary Crawley’s relationship with Anthony Foyle and Charles Blake, Tom Branson’s flirtation with Sarah Bunting, Edith Crawley’s pregnancy and the aftermath of Rose MacClare’s broken engagement with Jack Ross.

Season five will see a few new faces join the cast as well, including Sue Johnston, as the Dowager Countess's lady maid Denker. Richard E. Grant is appearing as art historian Simon Bricker, Daisy Lewis as Tom Branson's love interest Sarah Bunting and new maid Phyllis Baxter, played by Raquel Cassidy.

Dame Harriet Walter will also be returning as Violet Crawley's old school friend, Lady Shackleton. As for the show's star Lady Mary, played by Michelle Dockery, she is still juggling suitors.

The first episode promises shocking hook-ups. A new Labour government heralds changes that are being felt throughout the land, as well as above and below stairs. Plans for a war memorial unexpectedly pit Carson against Robert and Mrs Hughes. While unwanted female attention spells trouble for Jimmy, Thomas gives Baxter an ultimatum.

Branson’s burgeoning friendship causes Robert concern while Mary is ready to find love again. Cracks appear in Edith and Drewe’s special arrangement as she increasingly struggles to keep her emotions in check; this may have disastrous consequences for the whole household.

Downton Abbey S5 Episode 1 airs Wednesday 24th September at 9pm on TV3.
