Brand new TV3 series visits Homeless Shelters

in Cork and Waterford.

 

This two-part documentary series looks at homelessness in Ireland, and those working to combat it, to get a true insight into life from inside a shelter from those who know it best, the homeless.

 

Richie, a resident at the McGuire House, after a series of unfortunate events left him homeless, opens up about his past: “I ended up here because I lost my girlfriend, house, the whole lot.” “I felt like if I was to die of anything it would’ve been sadness.”

The Homeless Shelter is a brand new TV3 documentary about homelessness in Ireland, and those working to combat it. Since 1844, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, which is the largest charitable organisation in Ireland, has worked with a diverse range of people who experience extreme poverty and social exclusion throughout Ireland. This heart-breaking documentary shows the strong commitment that the SVP staff has towards helping all residents that walk through their doors. We see the daily struggles they encounter while trying to assist those who need help the most. And, we get a true insight into life from inside a shelter from those who know it best, the homeless.

 

Richie, who is currently a resident at the McGuire House, after a series of unfortunate events left him homeless, opens up about his past: “I ended up here because I lost my girlfriend, house, the whole lot.” “I felt like if I was to die of anything it would’ve been sadness.”

 

The staff who work at the SVP are an extremely dedicated team but It’s not always easy for them, especially when dealing with many who have social and mental health related issues. Terence O’Neill, Hostel Manager at the McGuire House, Waterford said: “You might hear of somebody who has commit suicide and you say to yourself ‘please god it’s not that person I had to put out last night.’”

 

In the first of this two-part series, TV3 focuses on Hostels in Cork and Waterford, documenting the staff who work in these 24 hour shelters and following those who are in real need of their services. David Buckley, who is staying at St Vincent’s Hostel in Cork, tells of how he came to be in his situation: “My marriage broke up and [I] just got depression and things like that and that’s how it ended up. There’s no point in lying about it. It could happen to anybody. They don’t understand it until it happens themselves.”
