While the majority of Irish people sleep soundly in their beds, there are a number of dedicated workers who labour through the night as a part of their regular routine. This brand new, three-part TV3 documentary series explores the night-shift workers from across Ireland as they go about their respective duties.
Observe as newspaper editorial and production teams handle the pressure of getting a newspaper ready to be delivered across the country; or witness the race against time as the Blood Bikers deliver urgently needed blood from one hospital to another. Whether it’s a milkman racing to deliver produce or road maintenance recovering stranded vehicles and their owners, there’s plenty of action occurring after dark. While these people may lead ordinary lives, employed in ordinary jobs, their journey through the night shift can be somewhat extra-ordinary.
In the first episode of Ireland By Night, we get a truthful view into the world of security as we document one company through its night shift. For Jim McLoughlin and his team, it’s a high-risk job as they encounter anything from regular break-ins to knife threats. We find out what it’s like to be a part of the security world in today’s society.
During the night we also follow Niall Cassidy, the local milkman of the greater Dublin area as he ploughs along his shift, delivering dairy products to all. Niall has seen quite a lot over his 24 years of delivering milk. He talks frankly about some of the strange things he encounters while working at night, which includes a dead body: “15 years ago I found a dead body. I think that must be one of the strangest things I’ve ever seen. I just saw two legs sticking out of a bush when I was in Tallaght. I went over to investigate and discovered I’d found a corpse.”
At 3am it’s the middle of the night for many but for Joe Duffy, the owner of Smithfield’s oldest flower stall, it’s time to get up and get ready for the busy day ahead.
‘Ireland By Night’ airs Tuesday 6th May at 8pm on TV3.
