This brand-new documentary, exclusive to TV3, examines the heart-breaking story of Savita Halappanavar and her husband Praveen. In October 2012, they arrived into an Irish maternity ward, unaware that the outcome would be devastating, causing outrage around the world. This documentary looks at Savita's tragic story and examines what went so tragically wrong for this young couple.

Through a series of storytelling devices, including narration, interviews and reconstructions, ‘A Silent Killer: Savita’s Story’follows a step-by-step account of Savita’s time in Galway hospital, with expert medical opinion examining where the system failed and why. Using factual evidence taken from the Coroner’s report and the HIQA report, the dramatic reconstructions accurately depict the timeline of events that led to her tragic death.

The documentary includes interviews with Dr. Peter Boylan, a key witness at the official enquiry into Savita’s death, Dr. Hema Divakar, President of the Federation of Gynecologists in India, Phil Prendergast, Labour MEP and midwife for 20 years and Dr. Muiris Houston, Medical Correspondent for the Irish Times.

‘A Silent Killer: Savita’s Story’raises provocative questions relating to Irish maternal care, Catholic ethos, law and the media, and looks for answers to these questions.

Speaking about A Silent Killer: Savita’s Story, TV3 Group Director of Content, Jeff Ford, said: “Like so many people across the nation, I was deeply saddened when I heard about the tragic death of Savita Halappanavar. This documentary will shed some light on the devastating turn of events surrounding that fateful day and will give viewers some insight into the story that unfolded leading to her untimely death.”

‘A Silent Killer: Savita’s Story’ airs Monday 24th March 2014 at 9pm on TV3.
