Starring a witty bunch of Ireland’s funniest, up and coming comedians, TV3’s brand new Irish comedy series Things we Love and Hate promises to have you falling off your seat with laughter!

There is no middle ground with certain topics of Irish popular culture. Either you think it’s wonderful and amazing or you break out into a rage of irritation at the thought of it! Either way, Irish stand-up comedians, Andrew Stanley, Gar Murran, Jarlath Regan, Colum McDonnell, Damian Clark, Willie White, Eric Lalor and Niamh Marron, along with members of the public, examine all the things that we, as a nation, love, hate and of course, love to hate!

This hour long show is pure entertainment at its best, as TV3 delves into those typical topics that Irish people just love to talk about such as television, politics, money, the weather at home, the Irish travelling abroad, sex, drugs, Irish culture and our attitudes towards foreigners, to name but a few! The side-splitting series discusses these topics of interest that are bound to get people into a state of hysterics!

In the first part of this two-part series, comedians Andrew Stanley, Jarlath Regan, Niamh Marron and Gar Murran take to the stage and the bar table to discuss their favourite topics. We also get the views of several generations of real Irish people.

In the second part of the comedy series, comedians Colum McDonnell, Damian Clark, Willie White and Eric Lalor take to the stage and bar table to discuss some of their favourite topics and again, we get the views of several generations of real Irish people.

Speaking about ‘Things we Love and Hate’, Series Producer, Dara Tallon, said: “For this new series we let some of the funniest comedians in the country, along with real members of the public, have their say on all the things we love and hate about being Irish.  Through recessions or booms, fair weather or snow, we will always have an opinion but seldom a solution. ‘Things We Love and Hate’ dips into these discussions and mixes it with some of the finest stand-up comedy Ireland has to offer.”

‘Things we Love and Hate’ episode 1 airs Friday 10th January 2014 at 10pm

NOTES TO EDITOR

BIOGS:

Jarlath Regan

Award winning comedian, writer and broadcaster, Jarlath Regan has gained a reputation with the industry and audiences for his uplifting, inventive and relentlessly funny stand-up. His performances have made him a firm favourite in all of the top clubs on the UK comedy circuit and his award winning Irishman Abroad podcast, where he interviews some of Ireland's most famous exports, has won him universal acclaim and a global audience.

Since 2007 Jarlath has brought seven solo shows to the Edinburgh Fringe. Between enjoying sell-out runs and earning rave reviews, it’s easy to see why he has become a darling of the festival circuit. Jarlath’s numerous international comedy festival performances include appearances at The Montreal Just for Laughs Festival, The New Zealand Comedy Festival and the Melbourne, Adelaide and Brisbane festivals as part of the Best of The Edinburgh Fest Showcase tours.

In 2013 Jarlath created his "An Irishman Abroad" podcast.  Show features in-depth interviews with Irish stars such as Graham Linehan, Dara O'Briain, Chris O'Dowd and musician Lisa Hannigan about their experiences abroad. In just a few epsiodes it shot straight to number one in the iTunes charts, won glowing reviews from the press including The Guardian. The Daily Telegraph went as far as to say that it "could turn out to be one of the biggest podcasts since Ricky Gervais picked up a microphone." The Irishman Abroad podcast was named in the much coveted iTunes Best of 2013 list as the Best New Audio Podcast of the year.

A finalist in both the BBC and Channel 4 New Comedy Awards, Jarlath’s first published book How To Break Bad News (Transworld for Random House) was an instant best-seller. Comprising a collection of his beautifully illustrated while hilariously dark greeting cards, the book gained many celebrity fans including Ardal O’Hanlon who called it “Original, funny and deliciously wrong!”

Jarlath’s second book Putting A Ring On It - What Not To Do When Attempting To Get Married, featured more than 200 brand new illustrations and became a cult hit.

In 2007 Jarlath made a three-part documentary about the Edinburgh Fringe for TV3. While following his progress in writing his first solo show, the documentary also saw Jarlath interview some of the world’s biggest comedians and pose as his own agent while blagging his way behind some of the festival’s velvet ropes.

Jarlath’s other credits include the Russell Howard's Good News (BBC 3), Comedy Central’s The World Stands Up, Last Comic Standing on NBC, Live at The Stand Comedy Club (BBC Radio Scotland), The Blame Game (BBC Radio Ulster) and The Apprentice You’re Fired (TV3).

The following year, Gar went on to be a finalist in So You Think You’re Funny at the Edinburgh Festival in 2007.

Gar has been a resident MC in Ireland’s largest comedy venue, ‘The Laugher Lounge’, for over 3 years. He also performs at all of the top clubs across the UK and Ireland including ‘The Comedy Store’, ‘Jongleurs’, ‘Hyena’ and the ‘Glee’.

Andrew Stanley

Having performed worldwide at the Montreal, Australian and Edinburgh Comedy Festivals and becoming a regular fixture on the Kilkenny Cat Laughs calendar, Andrew Stanley is one of the top comics working the Worldwide Comedy Circuit today. Whether it's performing as Resident MC in numerous clubs around Ireland, one of which is the legendary Comedy Cellar in Dublin, or as a quality act in his own right, Andrew is always high energy and quick witted enough to keep audiences thoroughly entertained.

Andrew has travelled to the Adelaide Fringe Festival twice, performed at the Melbourne, Sydney and New Zealand Comedy Festivals and has been invited to the prestigious Just For Laughs comedy festival in Montreal. He also travelled to the Edinburgh Fringe in 2006 where he teamed up with Australian comic Damian Clark in a show entitled I Dare Ya, which was then turned into a highly successful TV show on RTE2 in 2007, still the highest rated debut comedy show on Irish TV. He returned to Edinburgh in 2008 armed with 2 shows – His first debut solo show and his own brand of late night entertainment, Andrew Stanley’s Comedy Mish Mash, which returned the following year after receiving rave reviews along with a new solo show On Sale Now.

In 2010 and 2011 Andrew continued to make headway into the UK Circuit performing regularly at Glee, The Stand, Komedia, Jongleurs, Highlight as well as taking part in Latitude, V Stafford/Chelmsford and Reading Festivals.

“The comedy tsunami that was Andrew Stanley. It’s rare, outside of the Fringe, to see a comic so clearly destined for the top, but with astonishingly good observational material delivered and timed to perfection there’s no doubt about the destination of the young Irishman’s career.” - Scotsman (December 2011)

“Wittily done, while the spontaneity adds a thrill you don’t get with prepared material” – chortle.co.uk(2010)

“His euphoria is easily passed to an audience who laughs at every joke” ****

- Hairline (2009)

Colum McDonnell

Colum McDonnell is a comedian, actor, writer and broadcaster. This diminutive Irishman has stood up and made people laugh worldwide.

His TV credits are numerous, including The Republic Of Telly, The Podge and Rodge Show, Comedy Central’s The World Stands Up, and more recently RTE's critically acclaimed shows Irish Pictorial Weekly and Des Bishop’s Under The Influence.

“A born story teller, he really lights up the stage” - Forth FM Radio at Edinburgh Comedy Festival.

“One of the top comedians in Ireland” - Laughter Lounge Dublin.

"If you haven't seen Colum McDonnell perform then you are certainly missing out. Colum is better than most comedians who are selling out theatres. The best underground comedian in Ireland" - International Comedy.

Damian Clark

Aussie boy Damian Clark kicked off his comedy career when winning the ‘Perth Comedy Fringe Award’ in 2000 and hasn’t stopped since.

His first solo show The Bandit was a recipient of the ‘Melbourne International Comedy Festival Moosehead Award’ which led to touring all over Oz in the MICF Road Show. After acclaimed TV performances on comedy talkshow Rove Live, ABC’s Stand-Up! and created & starred in The Comedy Channel’s – ‘Damo Does Edinburgh’, Damo left the sunny shores of down under.

Damian moved to Ireland in 2005 and within weeks was hailed ‘The Number 1 event to see' and 'Cream of the crop’ (InDublin Magazine). Soon after arriving Clark became a regular feature in RTE's IFTA Award-winning Republic Of Telly, comedy panelist in three series of TV3’s The Apprentice: You’re Fired!, plus alongside fellow comic Andrew Stanley wrote & starred in the series I Dare Ya!, which became the highest rating Irish comedy debut to date.

Recently based in London, Damo’s rambunctious and uplifting stand up continues to tour clubs and festivals all over the UK, Ireland, Europe and beyond. Now is the time to catch this raw talent as he stands on the cusp of super stardom.

“Hilariously surreal…well-wrought set delivered with brio and huge charm…amazing” – The Scotsman

“Clark had the audience reeling with laughter…he is scorchingly funny and charmingly engaging” – Three Weeks

“There is barely a bad word to say about Clark: distinctive and possessing a comic talent beyond his years, both biological and mental” – Chortle.

Eric Lalor

Eric has just been crowned Irish Standup of the Year for the second year in a row by the readers of entertainment.ie. A remarkable achievement given that he was up against some of the bigger names in Irish comedy.

Eric Lalor’s first foray into comedy was a bit unusual. In 2006, as one of the participants of RTE Two’s Des Bishop’s Joy In The Hood, his first ever gig was filmed on his home turf of Ballymun in Dublin and broadcast to the entire nation.

Des went to Ballymun in search of new comedic talent and discovered Eric. Des was so impressed with what he saw that he brought Eric on his record-breaking, nationwide ‘Fitting In’ tour. Opening the show at ‘Live at the Marquee’ in Cork, Eric performed to 5,000 people.

Since then, Eric has gone from strength to strength and has now garnered a reputation in Irish comedy as a consistent performer, making him one of the most sought after acts in the country. His first year in the highly competitive world of stand-up comedy saw him win the Comedy Cellar and Capital Comedy Club’s Best Newcomer Award.

As a capable, flexible performer it is hard to pigeon hole his act. His warm, energetic onstage presence makes for an unforgettable experience for the audience. With gags that always hit the spot, his engaging, high intensity performances make him one of the top names of ‘must book’ comedians.

Eric is now a regular act at the prestigious Kilkenny Cat Laughs Festival, as well as playing the Electric Picnic, Galway Comedy Festival, Edinburgh Fringe, Portlaoise Halloween Howls and Iveagh Gardens Festivals as well as being invited to perform at the very first ever London Irish Comedy Festival in Oct 2012. He has also opened for some of the biggest names in Irish comedy including Tommy Tiernan, Des Bishop, Jason Byrne, PJ Gallagher, Andrew Maxwell, Colin Murphy and more.

“Excellent, bellyachingingly funny, fast moving.” - Kilkenny People.

“Flawless… It’s like Rab C. got Irish, got eloquent, but stayed scum” - Chortle UK.

“His vibrant, super energised stage presence connects with the audience… We’ve NEVER seen a crowd react so emphatically to one of our acts.” - Laughter Lounge, Dublin.

Niamh Marron

In 2013 Niamh was a star and finalist of the RTE New Comedy Awards. She performed at this year’s Electric Picnic Festival after winning Show me the Funny competition in Galway and was then invited to play at the Vodafone Comedy Festival in the Iveagh Gardens.

She was then asked to audition for Britain’s Got Talent and made it through all the auditions, and on to Glasgow to perform in the SECC arena in front of 4,000 people and the 4 judges, (Simon Cowell, David Williams, Amanda Holden and Alesha Dixon) walking away with four big yes's. Unfortunately Niamh was thought of as too risky for the live semi-finals and didn’t make it to the live shows. Niamh is also soon to be seen as a guest on BBC's show Monumental.

Niamh has proven to be very popular with audiences winning many comedy competitions, battles and smackdowns against other comics. And came second in the prestigious UK Funny Women Awards in London 2012.

"Consistently excellent - a live wire" - Hotpress

"Risky, edgy and a very naughty girl" - Simon Cowell, Britain’s Got Talent
