TV3 today announced that it is calling out for households to take part in the brand new factual entertainment series, Doctor In The House. The new six part series, produced by Independent Pictures, will attempt to tackle the onset of chronic disease and protect the health of our nation into the future.

In this series, our team of dedicated Doctors and health experts will work closely with each household in a bid to encourage each member of the house to make real changes in their lifestyle, for the benefit of their future. Our team will spend a week monitoring and testing a household, identifying risk factors and possible health problems for the individuals.

Each group will be given a prognosis and then the household will have eight weeks to work together, to modify their behaviour before being re-tested. The results of which will show if a household can really break the habits of a lifetime.

With research showing that 25% of heart attacks and strokes are preventable and more than half of our over 50s are living with two or more chronic diseases, Doctor In The House centres on preventive medicine. It is about focusing on how we think about our health and encouraging people to take preventive measures, to ensure a healthy future – after all, prevention is better than cure!

The expert team includes – Niall Moyna, Dublin City University Professor in the School of Health and Human Performance and member of the Centre for Preventive Medicine; Dr. Nina Byrnes, author of Your Health Matters, who has a special interest in preventive health and lifestyle medicine; and TV3’s Ireland AM resident doctor, Sinead Beirne.

Speaking about the series, Professor Moyna said: “Doctor In The House takes a unique approach to how lifestyle factors such as poor diet, excess alcohol intake, smoking and sedentary behaviour can negatively impact on our health. The programme will show how making small, positive changes to our lifestyle can significantly improve our health.”

Dr. Sinead Beirne added: “There is going to be a real buzz and energy in the show as our house calls will be all about preventing illness rather than curing. My aim is make people aware that bad lifestyle choices can significantly impact on future health and happiness. I plan to motivate people to make simple changes that will help them live longer healthier lives.”

Commenting on her involvement in the programme, Dr. Nina Byrnes said: "I'm delighted to be involved with this show. My mission in my surgery has always been to improve the health and well-being of my patients. I'm really looking forward to working with Independent Pictures and TV3 to help improve the health of families around the country and I hope the public really get behind the show."

TV3 is looking for households to sign up for this exciting health opportunity. You can apply as a couple, a family, or a group of housemates or students. The only condition is you must be over 18. Those participating must be available for occasional filming during January to May 2014 - specific dates will be confirmed as far in advance as possible in consultation with the households.
