Bora Aksu wows at London Fashion Week with a tulle spectacular15th Feb 19 | Fashion
The British based designer impressed with his signature romantic gowns.
London Fashion Week has kicked off, which means five days of designers showcasing their autumn/winter 2019 collections.
A much-loved mainstay on the LFW schedule, Bora Aksu has been showing in the capital for more than 15 years, and has become known for his dramatic gowns and romantic aesthetic.
He presented his latest collection at the Garden Museum to a front row that included models Daisy Lowe and Amber le Bon, and as usual, it didn’t disappoint.
The Turkish-born Central St Martins graduate specialises in intricate dresses with lots of ruffles, and he delivered plenty of those this time around, largely in a colour palette of pastels, like seafoam, baby blue, blush pink and lavender.
Iridescent fabrics gave the soft colours a shimmering, aquatic quality, as the models sashayed down the runway.
Unusually for an autumn/winter collection, several of the models sported what looked like sunglasses, with small black lenses surrounded by large, embellished metal frames.
The show was said to be inspired by Valentina Tereshkova, a Russian cosmonaut and politician, who also became the first woman to go into space – which may explain the industrial eyewear.
Alongside the frothy frocks were more seasonally appropriate offerings, by way of a pink shearling-lined flight jacket, a white puffer jacket and a pair of tailored overcoats.
Models were also kitted out in cool ankle length or over the knee dove grey and silver boots.
But the stars of the show were clearly the tulle-tastic dresses, which is why they were front and centre for the finale.
It may be six months until this collection hits the shop floor, but given Aksu’s client list includes the likes of Rita Ora, Ellie Goulding and Keira Knightley, chances are we won’t have to wait long to see the gowns once again, on the red carpet.
