Dame Barbara Windsor’s emotional last scenes as the soap icon will air tonight

It’s set to be an emotional night tonight for soap fans as Eastenders bids a final farewell to its most iconic character, Peggy Mitchell.

Dame Barbara Windsor returned last week for her final ever storyline as the famous matriarch and Peggy is set to take her last breaths tonight as she loses her battle with cancer.

Windsor has been a firm fan favourite since she arrived on the Square back in 1994 and Eastenders bosses were determined to give her the final send-off she deserves.

Windsor previously left the soap in 2010 but has returned on occasion for brief appearances but made the decision last year to leave for good.

Peggy was reunited with her on screen sons Phil and Grant, played by Steve McFadden and Ross Kemp, for the storyline. Kemp returned to the soap after a 10 year hiatus especially for Barbara Windsor's last storyline.

Peggy's final scenes are set to be emotional for not only the viewers, but also for her ‘hard man’ sons who find it difficult to come to terms with her death.

A source told the Sun that Peggy is set to die alone after taking a fatal overdose: “At the end, the drugs make her hallucinate. Her final scene is incredibly emotional.”

Executive producer Dominic Treadwell-Collins said Barbara’s final scenes were “the performance of her lifetime.”

A special edition of The One Show will be broadcast live from Albert Square tonight and Windsor will introduce her final episode herself.
