In an emotional interview with Midday’s Elaine Crowley, 26-year-old fitness blogger and mum of two Emma Murphy tells why she had to stand up and tell her story.

Emma’s heart-breaking video which alleges her former partner and father of her two children hit her, went viral within a few hours of being posted on Facebook on Monday, and has so far been viewed over 6 million times.

In her first television interview, Emma told Midday’s Elaine Crowley of her ordeal and why she decided to go public with the video:

“It’s so hard because every woman wants the perfect family. No family’s perfect but looking at my little boy, it kills me. I’m so saddened because they’re not going to have their mammy and daddy anymore together.”

“In my head I knew I needed to get away from this. It was very unhealthy. I knew I needed to break away. I needed to be a good role model for my kids and I needed the strength from somewhere and by posting the video that I did I’ve reached so many people. People all around the world are contacting me saying ‘thank you’, ‘thank you’”.

And Emma encouraged anyone who might be suffering domestic abuse, to stand up:

“I was that person and I didn’t think it was a big deal until this event happened. I didn’t think it was a big deal and it is a big deal. I’ve realised it’s a huge deal because of the amount of mails and that I’ve got from people and my best advice is, what I did, was, I ran straight to my family and friends and said ‘I need you all around me’. That gave me the strength and the courage and I realised I’m not on my own. I can do this.”

TV3 made several efforts to contact Emma’s former partner but couldn’t reach him for comment.

‘Midday’ airs weekdays at 11.30am on TV3.
