Minister Zappone shares sadness on not being able to share budget success with late wife
Thu, 12 October 2017
Tonight on The Six O’Clock Show, Minister Katherine Zappone was overcome with emotion as she spoke about how she wouldn’t be able to celebrate the passing of budget 2018 into law with her late wife Dr Ann Louise Gilligan.
Hosts Muireann O’Connell and Martin King were visibly moved by Minister Zappone’s words – at one point Muireann crossed over to the opposite couch to console Zappone who was fighting back tears.
Viewers praised O’Connell’s compassion with one tweet saying that she had shown incredible sympathy.
Minister Zappone said on the show ‘It’s really important for me to take the time out, because if you don’t take the time out you don’t really feel present, to try and let the grief integrate with who I am, to really know that’s she not here and she won’t ever be here. And you know we had a budget, but it was like going home that evening I couldn’t tell her all about it, which is what I did last year. Having said that I have a fantastic team around me and it’s really important to stay in the now. I know Anne Louise thought I was in a point in my life where I was really soaring, so I have to keep doing that. I don’t necessarily think it’s tougher for me than any other person who’s lost someone that they love. I adored her for 36 years every minute of it.'
The Six O'Clock Show airs Monday to Friday on TV3 and on 3player
