Child Safety

After a toddler in Co Meath bit into a laundry pod, Dr Sinead Beirne is here to tell us what to do in the event your child swallows a harmful substance at home.

WHAT TO DO IF YOUR CHILD SWALLOWS A POISON:

-Call Poison Information Line
-Get child to spit out poison but not vomit it
-Don't give them anything to eat or drink unless advised
-Keep hold of the container if there is one, to show GP

HSE ADVICE:

If your child has been exposed to a harmful substance:

You should call the Poisons Information Line: 01 809 2166 (8am-10pm every day)
Outside those hours - contact your GP or Hospital
If it is an emergency, call 999 or 112
