Homemade Baked Beans

Making your own baked beans allows you to better control the levels of added sugar and salt and With an ever increasing awareness on hidden sugars in food these smoke house beans are not only packed with flavor and fiber but with significantly reduced salt and sugar content and wont break the bank, so why not posh up your beans.

INGREDIENTS

olive oil
1 red onion finely diced
1 tbs tomato puree
1 tbs balsamic vinegar
1 tsp brown sugar
2 tsp smoked paprika
1 bay leaf
few drops of liquid smoke (optional)
500 g passata
400 g tin of haricot beans ( save the liquid for your mayo )

METHOD
heat a little oil in a saucepan and add your onions and gently sweat on a medium heat for around 10 mins or until they start to soften , if they stat to brown turn down your heat.Once all soft add your tomato puree , paprika , balsamic vinegar,sugar , bay leaf and make a paste , then all we do is add in our passata and our tin of washed and drained haricot beans and cook for a further 10 minutes and your sorted , serve on toast and there you have a cheap and quick tasty low sugar baked bean dinner .
