Counting calories at Christmas

Christmas is rapidly approaching and there is plenty of temptation to go around during the month of December as the party season gets into full swing. A new study has found that on Christmas day we can consume as much as 6,000 calories which is the equivalent of twelve Big Macs!

Dietician Louise Reynolds was in the Ireland AM kitchen this morning to tell us to still enjoy ourselves but also to let us know how many calories are in our festive food favourites.

We all know that plenty of alcohol is flowing over the Christmas period but how many of us are aware of the number of calories we are taking in? Louise listed some common Christmas drinks:

Pub or restaurant glass of wine: 110 calories.

Champagne, prosecco, cava etc: 90 calories.

Pint of beer: Calories.

If you want to watch your calorie intake when on a Christmas night out or just when having a few drinks at home, Louise recommends having a glass of water between alcoholic drinks.

We also all love a bit of finger food before or after all of the big Christmas meals so how many calories are lurking in treats like cocktail sausages or canapés?

Cocktail sausage: 110 Calories.

Typical canapé: 220 Calories.

Sausage roll: 355 Calories.

Louise said that a good tip would be to “be aware that you are going to have a big meal after that.” She also suggested some healthy finger-food alternatives such as celery or carrots cut into sticks for dipping.
