In this three-part documentary series, Get the Numbers, Write, broadcaster and student of psychology Sheana Keane has been invited by the Louth Meath Education and Training Board to document a unique series of literacy projects.
Traditionally in Ireland we have thought about literacy as the skills of reading and writing; but today that definition has been changed. Our world is far more complex than that even of twenty years ago and we need to be able to understand and critically appreciate not only the printed text, but broadcast media, digital media, math’s and skills to solve problems to meet the demands of a rapidly changing society. The latest figures show that as many as one in six Irish adults struggle to understand the written word while one in four struggle with numbers.
Over the course of three months our five adult learners - all of whom have returned to adult learning at the Louth Meath Education and Training Board - will come together with the aim of bringing literacy and numeracy projects directly into the communities of Navan, Dundalk and Drogheda; to help others, create awareness, remove the stigma and improve the literacy skills at a local level.
The integrated learning that our five participants will undertake together, aims to mobilize their different communities with a series of three projects in Navan, Dundalk and Drogheda. Sheana will spend time with our five contributors to learn and understand what it is like to live with poor literacy and numeracy levels.
